Fifty Shades of Grey Why So Much Fuss

Fifty Shades of Grey Why So Much Fuss The major event of the last weekend apart from St. Valentines day? The premier of scandalous movie 50 Shades of Grey of course. Why the book and the movie Fifty Shades of Grey actually got so popular? Should you rush to the cinema and see it immediately or is it just another marketing hype? Should you ever criticize it in public? Lets try to figure this out. It’s super-easy to Google â€Å"50 Shades of Grey† right now and get a really basic idea of the ferocious reaction so far from movie lovers and critics across the board. For example, here’s an Eagle Eye view from IMBD: Okay, so out of close to 62,000 people, it’s got a score of 4 out of 10. Ouch. Totally unexpected based on the popularity of the 2011 erotic romance novel and the amount of fuss surrounding the film leading up to release. Then of course there’s headlines like these from platforms in the ilk of Variety – â€Å"Box Office: Fifty Shades of Grey Explodes With Record-Breaking $81.7 Million†. So low ranks an bad reviewsbut the books becomes bestseller and the movie breaks the records – what are the reasons for that? Typical Love Story for Women If we look at the actual stats from IMDb we see that the reviews are absolutely dominated by females (especially in the under 18 demographic). This shouldn’t be a shock to anyone: The story hit its target audience – women looking for a wealthy attractive man in suit who is able to make any woman happy. It follows the pattern of famous Hollywood stories, starting from beauty and the beast – ending with Twilight. Each time women believe that no matter how hurt they are they will be able to change men to good husbands/lovers/fathers and make a happy end of that weird relationships. Lie? Yes, but somehow it still works! Bad PR Is Still PR If we head over to the actual reviews, it gets real ugly, real fast. Without going too deeply into all this negativity and movie bashing here’s the current headings of the reviews on the first page as of when this article was written: Just as I predicted! 1 Star This movie raped my Intelligence: 1 Star My god†¦this was awful: 1 Star Oh this film was just DREADFUL! 1 Star Yeesh, that was a whole lot of nothing: 2 Stars 100 Shades of Terrible: 1 Star It just goes on, and on, and on. What gives? Apparently, this movie demolished all expectations. Check out this quote from Vox contributor Alex Abad-Santos: â€Å"Seen through the lens of a sci-fi romantic comedy about a man whos barely human and the awkward woman who comes to love him, Fifty Shades is a masterpiece of subversion and dark humor - and much, much better than anything our kinky minds could have imagined.† Sci-fi romantic comedy? Wait, what? Others describe it as the male shovanistic TV show Mad Men on parabolic steroids. The most common notion is that while it was meant to be a creative take on the books (which most of the women watching the movie have read) it’s too predictable and the production value didn’t make up for the vapid acting and unengaging chemistry between the protagonist and antagonist. The Story Setting In reality, we should step back and look at 50 Shades of Grey story from a much more grand social-economic perspective. Here are three things going on in America and the western world in general that have a direct influence on the way this story is being received: Global economic shift with â€Å"suits† being demonized. Traditional sexual roles for men and women being erased or flipped on their head. Rampant over-sexualization thanks to internet porn. Roughly half to 60% of all males and females in the 18-44 demographic in western societies are either divorced or single. That’s a fact. At least according to poles and such. Furthermore, we’re in a part of the social cycle where men are being demonized, not just men in suits. Although the oligarch-type and the Wall Street-type are being targeted to†¦ Unprecedented income equality levels. Trillions in â€Å"bail-outs/ins† The control that multinational corporations seem to hold over world governments. When we put all these pressure together, stuff them into a modern man or women searching for their place in a quagmire-society and then sit them in front of a movie that uses these pain-points to create a somewhat outlandish representation of society, power, and relationships†¦well, it makes for some sizzling hot PR! The Mass Is Vile This is a perfect representation of how backwards society is becoming. Everywhere we look the response is overwhelmingly negative and yet sales are breaking records. Hordes of people sholdering their way through ticket and snackbar lines to take their seat and see if it’s as bad as everyone says it is. In a mad world, madness is the only source of real entertainment. In a juxtaposed and confused society, the worse something is, the better? It was Charlie Chapline who said: Man as an individual is a genius. But men in the mass form the headless monster, a great, brutish idiot that goes where prodded. The Influence of Media The only critics that seem to actually like the movie are more well-known and from more mainstream sources: The Telegraph: â€Å"isnt nearly as painful as it could have been†¦Ã¢â‚¬ The Guardian: â€Å"The bulk of the film, really, is Ana deciding whether or not to embrace the role of Christian’s new submissive.† New York Magazine: â€Å"Superb!† So in terms of people, horrid but worth spending money on. In terms of mainstream critics, the movie is a love/hate piece of cinematic art that slaps the viewer in the face, especially if they read the original book. The more coverage (no matter) positive or negative the story gets – the more attention is brought to it. That results in fame and money – simple as 1-2-3. Still doubt if you should see the 50 shades of grey movie? Or read the book? Well, life is short, if this many people are hating on it, you might completely LOVE it. The key is walking into the cinema without any expectations whatsoever. This is not the story that needs overthinking. Take it for what it is. To make it really interesting, in your mind look at the main male and female duo as society (played by Dakota Johnson) and the power-elite (played by Jamie Dornan).

Ethic in social work and nursing....managerialism Essay

Ethic in social work and nursing....managerialism - Essay Example Upon inspecting the patient’s house, the social worker discovered that the house is not fit to live in due to the presence of faeces, urine dirty clothes and waste materials all over the floor. As an end result, the house was full of mice, rats and insects that could negatively affect the patient’s physical health. The social workers did not consider paying the patient’s house cleaning expenses as an option. Therefore, the hospital paid for his bed occupancy, food and washing to keep the man healthy until someone made the cleaning arrangements in the patient’s house. For this study, the researcher will discuss the health and social care workers’ ethical and professional dilemmas behind the case of the 65-year old patient in relation to the anti-discriminatory practices. Upon exploring the health professional ethics in the light of the organizational legal and social contexts, the researcher will discuss the proper health care management on how the case of the 65-year old patient should be addressed. In the process, the researcher will provide some case-based illustrations as part of demonstrating the researcher’s personal understanding and informed judgement over the professional ethical dilemmas. As part of UK’s health practice, the health and social care workers are required not to discriminate their patients for any reasons. (Brayne & Carr, 2005) In line with this matter, health and social care workers should equally practice the law of beneficence to all patients in the sense that all health and social care workers are required to do only good actions that may contribute positive effects to the overall welfare of the patients. (Mental Health Act, 2005; DOH, 2001b ) The social care workers in the case of the 65-year old patient did practice the law of beneficence since they have decided on what is the best way to promote the health condition of the old patient. Aside from the need to abide with the law of confidentiality (Mental

American Political System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

American Political System - Essay Example In addition, many historians feel that that the exit strategy was executed in a hasten manner and was different than the exit date. Both Kennedy and Nixon felt that Vietnam could be saved even though that was not the case as the pressure from American public continued to mount (â€Å"Isolationism†). As a world power, it was crucial that the United States made a stand to solidify their position as a world superpower. When JFK ordered his troops to withdraw from Vietnam in 1963, it was a clear symbolization that Johnson would have executed the same order. According to many historians, the judgment was derived through the Johnson’s statement as he states, â€Å"To Kennedy and his fellow New Frontiersmen, it was a doctrine of faith that the problems of Vietnam lent themselves to an American solution† (Perkins 20). The Kennedy administration in essence felt that the problems associated with Vietnam were in geopolitical terms. As part of the containment policy, Kennedy considered Vietnam to be highly risky. As the toll of death count continued to stagger, the American public became weary of the Kennedy administration (Perkins 24.) The implications were endless because South Vietnam remained to be in chaos and could have fallen under the rule of communism (Brooks 8). In essence, the Vietnam War served as a testament of the constant struggle of American foreign policy to fight against communism or any methodology that risks Democracy. This is depicted even in modern century as America continues to enforce democracy in other parts of the

Commentary on my creative writing piece focusing on The Dubliners Essay Example for Free

Commentary on my creative writing piece focusing on The Dubliners Essay After completing my story, I thought I would say how the story that I had written related to the story The Dubliners. The story that I wrote, I related to the theme of paralysis and the risk of death, a vision of the future and also a little about money, which is used in The Dubliners. I chose this viewpoint on the story as I thought it would relate well to the background I was using. Especially the theme of death would work well, as death is a very common situation so it helped when I dramatised the theme. Also I decided to use the times of today, as I thought it would be more easier to relate to The Dubliners using a situation in a lower/ middle class background, but using a cultural difference. I also decided to use third person narrative, as I thought it would be clearer in third person. I did try to use first person, but I had a bit of difficulty in putting a point across, so I decided to use third person, as I found it much more flowing to do. I decided to start off with a line, which explained the background so the story would be easier to understand, as I used a different culture. If I had gone straight into a story, the story may have been hard to understand. I included a little introduction to the character and the backgrounds, so the reader would notice what culture I was trying to show and how I was trying to relate it to The Dubliners. I think the introduction to the character and the culture, is a very important thing in my story. This was only in the beginning, but when I used a little climax. I used a twist in the middle of my story, to make sure the reader would be more interested and engaged to read on. The method I used was an everyday experience, which seemed like a big thing. This helped me to use the theme of vision of the future, with the character knowing there would be more trouble. The ending I used both of the themes of death and vision of future. I think death was a very important in the whole story, which showed the theme of paralysis. I used the theme of vision of future, as the character had death on their mind through the whole story, and this helped to use the theme of death. I think I can relate this to The Dubliners, as the theme of paralysis and the theme of death and darkness is used very often. I chose to end the story in this way as it dramatises the themes in which that I used. Also I used description, with a stressful atmosphere used. I think this ending suits the culture in which I wrote the story about. As it is believed that shootings are made in this background a lot. This I thought would be the best way to end my story. I think I thought about my main character quite a lot, especially with the culture to take in account. Also, the use of the characters pride and making the character emotional about death and escape. This helped me to explain how the character was feeling. I think I used the character well in the situation, because the background and culture is like real life. I have read and researched situation like this and deaths are always happening. This is why it was important, that I made sure the character, language and the actions were correct. This in my opinion was the best thing to do was research a little about the background, also things such as drugs, typical backgrounds, and even clothing I researched so I made sure the situation was just like real life and not something in reality. I used the background and the subject matter as it all related to one thing. Especially the setting and atmosphere, which all related to death. I used the subject of stress in my story as well, the whole theme of stress, occurred to me as a good way in which to escape or a good way to look for escape. Stress can usually consist of anger and frustration, which is how it is related to The Dubliners. These emotions are shown within my story and also The Dubliners. The language I used in my story was descriptive and also gave good and relevant information, when was needed. As I used a different content of language, I had to explain what some words meant. Also I think my story would sound effective if it was to be read out loud, as the situation is real and can happen in life. Maybe in some cases people can relate to this kind of story, as it can also send a message across about gangs, firearms, drugs, and also maybe drinking. After writing this story I think that this has many themes which could be related to the story, The Dubliners. As you can see I have included themes such as death, escape, darkness and also vision for the future. I think these themes helped me to relate the story with the best use, as cultural I was not sure on which to write a story about, that is why I used a different culture, in which I found more interesting to write about.

Computers in Education :: Teaching Education Essays

Computers in Education The computer has influenced education in a very positive way. There are now an estimated ten million computers in schools around the country. Computers equally benefit both the teacher and students. The computer allows for faster, neater, and more creative assignments. Tools such as the Internet, Excel, Word, and Access allow students to easier research and prepare papers. Computers are very helpful to teachers. Many teachers can take advantage of the computers in their classroom or at home by entering grades and allowing the computer to compute them. Entering the grades can be very simple and fast. Allowing the computer to compute the grades saves time from manually computing them. The teacher can also set up attendance on the computer. This is a quick and effective way to see who has missed class, or has been tardy. All this only requires the right type of software, and very little time. Educational software can also help a teacher out. If a student is having trouble with a particular Math, English or Science strategy, a teacher can setup the program to help teach the student. This is helpful because the teacher can continue teaching the rest of the class, but also know that the other child is being helped. The computer allows for a new creative way of teaching, one that can keep the students interested. Many students today rely on the computer for homework assignments. This can range from typing a paper to finding a book on the Internet. Many homework assignments for high school and college students must be typed. Some assignments may also require charts or tables. The computer can suggest different phrases or words to make the paper sound better, use spell check, and allow the document to be saved. This also helps a teacher because the papers are much neater, making them easier to read. It is very beneficial to the student because information can be found and processed a lot faster. If a student is trying to find a book, just typing in a few words can locate the book much faster then looking through a card catalog. These are little things that save the student and teacher time. With all the time that is saved, the more learning can take place.

Organizational Behavior at Accenture Essay

1. Introduction This paper gives an overview of the organizational behavior (Organizational Structure, Culture, and Leadership) at Accenture– the last organization I worked with. Accenture is an international management consulting, technology services and outsourcing organization, with approximately 0.25 million people and clients in more than 120 countries. It has generated net revenue of US$ 27.9 billion for last fiscal year i.e. 31 st August 2012. (Accenture,2012) 2. Organizational Structure 2.1 Accenture’s Structure – At A Glance Organization’s structure divides the organizational activities and co-ordinates them to achieve the aim of the organization. Accenture is organized into various partially overlapping industry areas that allow the clients to choose from a variety of integrated consulting services. It upholds four global operations workforces: 1. Consulting 2. Servicing 3. Solutions 4. Enterprise Table 2.1 highlights five operating groups and their respective 19 industry groups within the organization. (Accenture Facts,2012) Financial services Banking Capital Market Insurance Health & Public Services Health Public Services Communications , Media & Technology Communication Electronics & High Tech Media & Entertainment Product Automotive Air, Freights & Travel Services Consumer Goods & Services Industrial Equipment Infrastructure & Transportation Resources Chemical Energy Natural Resources Utilities Table 2.1 The figure below displays the organizational chart of Accenture and explains how different sub-units interact with each other. Exam Number: B031449 Page 3 of 11 Figure 2.1 Accenture’s Organizational structure (Source: Official board, 2012) 2.2 Analyzing the Structure of Accenture Buchanan and Huczynski (2010) defined seven key elements of organizational structure and in this section, we will see how they relate to Accenture as an organization. It can be easily inferred from the organizational structure (Figure 2.1) and Work group division (Table 2.1) that Accenture is a large complex organization that requires its employees to be highly specialized in the tasks allocated to them to ensure that quality work is delivered. In order to make sure that all the employees are highly skilled with respect to their tasks, an intense induction takes place in the beginning of their journey in the organization. Accenture follows a tall organizational hierarchy structure due to its diverse workforce and workgroups where Span –of –Control for a Manager depends on the size of the project. Within the solutions workforce, in a single project, following hierarchy exists: Figure 2.2 Hierarchies in a project For example, Span of Control for the project in which I worked was a 96: Designation Programmers (10) Senior Programmers (8) Analyst Programmer (6) Team Lead (4) Manager Span of Control One Team lead , supervises 24 resources One Manager supervises 4 team-leads. So total Span of Control = 96 The tasks in each project in the Solutions workforce are departmentalized into different submodules i.e. Analysis, Design & Build, and Testing. Department of Analysis is responsible for creating business artifacts that detail out client’s requirement and proposed solution to achieve it. These artifacts are then passed to the Design & Build Team who create the high-level design documents and develops the products which client has asked for. Once the product is delivered, it is then passed on to the testing team to ensure that the final product is as per the business artifacts and there are no issues encountered. Accenture is highly formalized organization, where each project while working on a client’s requirement has to adhere to the policies, procedures and norms set by Accenture as well as the clients. This is one of the key approaches to gain the client’s trust. Since project managers have the authority to take decision related to their respective projects, we can call Accenture as highly centralized organization. 3. Organizational Culture Culture is embedded and reflected in every aspect of an organization. As stated by Ravasi, D., Schultz, M. (2006), organizational culture is a lay down of shared intellectual assumptions, which guide understanding and action in an organization by defining suitable behavior for diverse situations. Figure 3.1 is a three-layer model for organizational culture developed by Edgar Schein (2004). Figure 3.1: Schein’s three levels of culture – Source (Bohine, Markham, 2003) Insight on Accenture’s Culture 1. Schein’s three levels of Culture a) The first level i.e. Observable level is the most visible layer. Table 3.1 highlights few of the Surface manifestation of culture at Accenture Manifestation Ceremonials Course Norms Slogan Symbol Accenture Fun Fridays, sporting events, monthly birthday celebrations, quarterly awards Greenfield training for the new employees where the number of days varies from 1 week to 6 weeks depending on the employees Code of Business conduct led by multiple policies High Performance Delivered Accenture has six core values (Accenture Core Values) – Stewardship: Fulfilling our obligation of building a better, stronger and more durable company for future generations, protecting the Accenture brand, meeting our commitments to stakeholders, acting with an owner mentality, developing our people and helping improve communities and the global environment Best People: Attracting, developing and retaining the best talent for our business, challenging our people, demonstrating a â€Å"can-do† attitude and fostering a collaborative and mutually supportive environment Client Value Creation: Enabling clients to become high-performance businesses and creating long-term relationships by being responsive and relevant and by consistently delivering value. One Global Network: Leveraging the power of global insight, relationships, collaboration and learning to deliver exceptional service to clients wherever they do business Respect for Individual: Valuing diversity and unique contributions, fostering a trusting, open, and inclusive environment and treating each person in a manner that reflects Accenture’s values. Integrity: Being ethically unyielding and honest and inspiring trust by saying what we mean, matching our behaviors to our words and taking responsibility for our actions Rewards and Recognition in Accenture: Accenture has various ways of acknowledging an employee’s contribution towards achieving the â€Å"High Quality† work. In addition to promotion, few of the awards given by Accenture (specific to solutions domain) are: ACE Award – Accenture Celebrates Excellence is an award given on quarterly basis to the employees who show outstanding performance during a quarter in their respective industrial groups. The nominations for these awards are forwarded by the project manager along with the citation to justify the nominations. Innovator for the quarter – This category of award is held at different project levels and is awarded to an individual or group of people who have innovated something to either add value to the client or helped in increasing automated work to save on efforts. Star of the month – This category of award is also held at project level where the work of an employee performing extraordinary is acknowledged. Propel Awards – This category of award is held at industrial group level where the employees are awarded against different criteria’s e.g. Adding Value to Client, Organizing quality work and anticipating critical situations etc. Celebrating Performance – Celebrating performance is a tool through which Team leads and above acknowledges the work of an individual by giving them some points. These points can be redeemed via a shopping catalog holding a range of different things. c) The third level i.e. basic assumption is invisible layer. It is the perception held by individuals concerning human behavior. As mentioned earlier, this cannot be seen but felt by the individuals and hence is difficult to be described in words for any organization. 2. On analyzing Accenture based on different Cultural framework and Cultural typologies it can be said that Accenture falls into Role culture and Communal culture. The justification for this goes below: ï‚ § Accenture is very much driven by its policies, procedures, and rules, which makes it high on formalization aspect. Figure 2.1 clearly shows the level of hierarchy that Accenture has. Managers at top of the hierarchy work as per their roles and specializations that make Accenture a highly centralized organization and hence putting it into a Role culture. However, if we deep dive to the lowest division i.e. the Projects, the task to be achieved is allocated at the Managerial level and is then cascaded down to different team members based on their expertise. The aim of the team is to ensure the task is delivered on time and with a high quality. For example, in my projects, there were times when a task demanding high expertise on specific domain were assigned to the senior programmers instead of the team leads. This clearly displays that the project division is on to the Task culture i.e. high formalization, low centralization where people are acknowledged based on their expertise and not just position. ï‚ § Accenture has very strict entry criteria and employees who suit the working environment are selected. Once the employees are in the company, another level of assessment happens to check the skills to identify which project who the employee be best suited for. During an initial phase in the project, the employees are giving an intensive training about the core values of Accenture as well as the client that they are working for. The roles and goals for each individual are made clear right from the beginning and each employee is expected to have a degree of flexibility to switch the roles as and when required. All these characteristics make Accenture falls into the category of Communal culture i.e. High Sociability and high solidarity. 4. Leadership Walt Disney said, â€Å"You can dream, create, design, and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it requires people to make the dream a reality† (Disney, 2011) Accenture groups skills, competencies, and personality traits of effective leaders into three vital pillars (Accenture Leadership): Visionary Evangelist- They see possibilities and inspire others with their vision; they know where the company is headed and what its customers will value in the future. Relationship Builder-They enlist the support and capabilities of others by building loyalty, motivating and engaging. Manager of Execution- They provide structure, discipline and a sense of priorities to get things done. Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard (1998) described the concept of situational leadership. Situational leadership is an approach of identifying the most effective way of motivating, directing, and supporting employees to get the work done. Whether it is the leaders at the top of hierarchy (CEO) or the leaders at the lowest division (project managers), leadership style in Accenture varies depending upon the situation. Figure 4.1 Situational Leadership Model (Source: Davidmerzel, 2012) How Leadership style works in Accenture When an employee is new to a project or the organization, it is ensured that a counselor and a supervisor are assigned to him. It is supervisor’s responsibility to ensure that the employee understand the norms and the working culture of the project and Councilor helps the employee with the career aspirations and issues (if any) faced by him while working in the project. In other words, it can be said that supervisor acts as the coach and councilor supports the employee at the same time. Supervisor and the Councilor are not the same person and it is the councilor who remains the same throughout the journey in Accenture where as supervisors keep of changing as when an employee progresses. Once an employee displays the ability and the skills required to tasks assigned (i.e. generally at Analyst Programmer level), the work is then delegated where very few directions and support are required. At no point in Accenture, you would find a leader portraying the directive leadership. Support and mentoring is always provided until an employee is capable to work on his own. 5. Synopsis Accenture is an organization on the move, one that is engaged in a good range of projects in various locations. Its culture varies from one extreme to another depending on the client and the geographical location of the office in which one reside. Employees, working at the client site, particularly for extended periods, find themselves following client’s culture as well as Accenture’s. It has a youthful environment that helps in making contacts, which lasts as an employee moves from project to project. In spite of the youthful, work-hard/play-hard atmosphere, employees strictly adhere to Accenture’s high standards, which require dedication and discipline on behalf of the employees. People at Accenture genuinely respect and admire each other. Willingness to help others and strong interpersonal skills are more common that being self-centered. This can be easily seen by the prompt responses of peers in different cities and countries towards any technical query being raised at the company’s portal. To summaries, Accenture surely is a strong cultured and centralized organization where the core values of the organization and client’s both are kept in mind and at the same time its ensured that employee’s professional aspirations are also met. I would definitely say a great place to work! 6. References (Arranged alphabetically) 1. Alcohol And Drug Addiction Among People Of Different Ages

Alcohol and drug addiction are two important topics in today’s society. Alcohol and drug addiction affects people of different ages with different backgrounds and ethnicities. There are many researches and studies regarding underlying reasons and roots of these issues. Just as many other addictions, these addictions have psychological, biological, and sociological roots to it.
